RMS Titanic was a British ocean liner operated by the White Star Line. On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, she struck an iceberg late on 14 April 1912 and sank in the early hours of 15 April. Of the 2,208 passengers and crew on board, about 1,500 lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. At the time, Titanic was the largest ship afloat and was celebrated for her luxury, advanced engineering, and safety features, including watertight compartments. However, she carried lifeboats for only about half of those on board. The tragedy led to major reforms in international maritime safety regulations and remains one of the most famous shipwrecks ever, leaving a lasting impact on popular culture.
