MV Goya was a Norwegian cargo ship built in 1940 for the Johan Ludwig Mowinckel Rederi and named after the Spanish painter Francisco Goya. After Germany invaded Norway in 1940, the vessel was seized by the Kriegsmarine and converted into a troop transport. In the final months of World War II, Goya participated in Operation Hannibal, evacuating German soldiers and civilians across the Baltic Sea as Soviet forces advanced. On 16 April 1945, while carrying thousands of refugees and military personnel, she was torpedoed and sunk by the Soviet submarine L-3. The ship sank within minutes, causing a catastrophic loss of life. Only 183 people survived from an estimated 6,700 passengers and crew, making the sinking of Goya one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history.
